Abstract

Toarcian brachiopods, recently collected from the southern and southeastern border of the Armorican Massif (Vendée and Deux-Sèvres Depts., France) and well located in the ammonite-based chronostratigraphic succession, show a juxtaposition of Northwestern species, North Tethyan species and ubiquitous species. This juxtaposition indicates that the border area acted as a transitional zone between paleobiogeographic provinces during the Early and Middle Toarcian (Bifrons Zone). It represents, on both sides of the Massif Central, the northernmost area with Ibero-Pyrenean brachiopods. There was then a gap, from the base of the Late Toarcian to the top of the Pseudoradiosa Zone, when the paleoenvironmental conditions were not suitable for brachiopods. Brachiopod faunas only reappear in the Aalensis Zone where they are represented mainly by Homoeorhynchia cynocephala.
